About/Profile At the age of seven, my family emigrated to the UK from India so that my father could complete his surgical training. My early education was in primary and grammar schools in Grantham, Lincolnshire, followed by public school in Darjeeling (India) and then Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, where I did my “A” levels. This was followed by medical school in Nottingham. I graduated in 1984.

After completing my junior and senior house officer posts in Nottingham, London and Mansfield, I went on to complete my basic surgical training as a Registrar in Edinburgh (1988 to 1991) where I obtained my FRCS in 1990.  My Orthopaedic training was in the North-East of England (the Newcastle rotation) which allowed me to get the FRCS (Orth) in 1995. This was followed by a Hand Fellowship at Nottingham and Derby in 1996.

I was appointed Consultant at Rotherham in 1997 as a general Orthopaedic Surgeon. However, it was evident that there was a dire need for a Hand and Wrist Surgery service. I made this my objective and, I’m glad to say, achieved it over the next few years. I then specialised exclusively in this area of practice with a particular interest in wrist arthroscopy, arthroplasty and Dupuytren’s surgery. I retired in December 2019 though I continue to do some part-time clinical work.

I have published peer-reviewed papers on Hand and Wrist surgery and have also written a book chapter.

My main professional interest is education: as a consultant I was a Higher Surgical Trainer and held the post of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield. I am currently the lead examiner for section 2 of the FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics (Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations) in the UK. I also examine for the Diploma in Hand Surgery for the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (I am a member of the examining committee), the Joint Surgical Fellowship in Orthopaedics (Hong Kong, Singapore and Edinburgh), the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination in Trauma and Orthopaedics (Kuala Lumpur) and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. One of my roles is the provision of Equality and Diversity training.

I am a Fellow of the BSSH and Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I have been a Holdsworth Club member since 1999 and was president from 2017 to 2021.
